How Poppet teaches maths
Why we show the number sentence right away
Children don't learn maths by being tested. They learn it the way they learn everything else — by meeting the same true thing, again and again, until it feels obvious.
So in every story, when a moment of maths arrives, we show the child the number sentence itself:
5 − 1 = ?
Not hidden. Not saved for a quiz at the end. Right there, calmly, as part of the story — the same way you'd point at a word while you read it aloud.
Because our aim is to teach, not to test.
A classroom test asks, “Do you already know this?” We do the opposite. We show the child the correct way to think about a problem, over and over, in situations they recognise from their own life. There's no failing here — if a child doesn't know, Poppet simply shows them. The learning is in the meeting, not the marking.
The same little sum, hiding everywhere
Here's the quiet magic of 5 − 1. Once a child has met it a few times, they start to see it everywhere — and that's the moment real problem-solving begins.
5 days until the first day of school. 1 day goes by. How many are left?
5 − 1 = 4
5 apples in the bowl. You eat 1. How many are left?
5 − 1 = 4
5 ducks on the pond. 1 flaps away. How many are still swimming?
5 − 1 = 4
5 crayons in the box. 1 rolls under the sofa. How many can you still colour with?
5 − 1 = 4
5 sweets in your hand. You give 1 to your brother. How many are yours now?
5 − 1 = 4
Different apples, different ducks, different days — but the same true sum underneath.
That's what 5 − 1 = 4 really is: not a fact to memorise, but a shape that fits a hundred everyday moments. When a child learns to recognise that shape — to see that “one flew away” and “one got eaten” and “one day passed” are all the same question — they haven't just learned an answer.
They've learned to solve problems.
