Why I built Poppet
I've tutored children since I was young, and later worked as a researcher — fascinated by brain science, educational psychology and what actually makes children learn. When I became a parent, I grew quietly disappointed that almost every app is built to hook a young mind, not protect it.
Call it ADHD, autistic thinking, giftedness, high sensitivity — or simply a child who doesn't fit the mould. These are all names for a highly active brain that hasn't yet found the right environment to learn in. So I built Poppet to protect the growing brain, make room for every kind of learner, and link every subject into one connected understanding of the world.

Ever since I was young, I've tutored children. I came to know the drill-and-memorise methods inside out, and I saw their cost up close: children who could reach the right answer but never truly understood the question.
A young child's brain is often ready to read long before their eyes are. So Poppet reads stories aloud with highlighted subtitles — a child can read with their ears, their eyes, or both. That, in the end, is what Poppet is about: a calm, imaginative way for every kind of child to understand their world, and to love learning about it.

What ages is it for?
Designed for families with children aged 3–9. Each story has one fixed school-year label, from Reception · Age 4–5 through Year 3 · Age 7–8, so families can choose the right level from the shelf.
How is this different from another maths game or app?
It isn't a game. There are no points, timers, streaks or flashing buttons designed to keep your child tapping. It's a calm read-aloud storybook that pauses to wonder — the maths comes from the story, not from noise, and it ends like a book should.
Can my child read it on their own?
Yes. Poppet reads every story aloud with highlighted words, so a child can read with their ears, their eyes, or both — even before they're ready for small-print reading.
Is it a subscription?
Never. You buy a book from £0.50 and keep it for 2 years — no recurring charges.
What maths does it actually cover?
Counting and number bonds, adding and taking away, doubling and sharing, times tables, time and money — mapped to EYFS and KS1 by year, and growing as we add Key Stage 2.
What about my child's data?
Poppet stories work without photos, profiles, or unnecessary child data. We only use the information needed to provide the story and keep access working. GDPR-friendly.
What if my child gets an answer wrong?
Nothing bad. Poppet gently shows the correct answer and carries on with the story. No red crosses, buzzers, scores or fail screens — mistakes don't stop the story.
